A Note From Dave & Victoria

With March Madness in the air now, Dave and a couple of our clients enjoyed watching a basketball game at the Air Force Academy last week, where his son is an officer representative for the team.

Dave continues to get requests to speak on his favorite topic—his Up-Side-Down Networking approach. Last week, he spoke to three groups on how to grow and maintain membership for leads groups and how to think of networking as an opportunity to give gifts away. This is truly his passion!

Discovering and following your passion is beautifully illustrated in a book Victoria has been reading, Make the Impossible Possible by Bill Strickland is a powerful story of how one man’s passion inspired others to achieve seemingly impossible dreams. However, before we seek to find and follow our passion, it’s a good idea to uncover and eliminate any limiting beliefs that may hold us back.

Our very best regards,

Dave and Victoria

Business Owner in the Spotlight

Barbara Brannen
Ener-Cast Human Resource Strategies

Like a lot of Make-it-Flyers, Barbara Brannen is a serial entrepreneur. Her original company, Playmore, was started in 1999 and is now a publishing house for her books and home to her keynote speaking. Playmore originally had a human resources consulting component that grew so large that Barbara had to give it its own name: Ener-Cast.

Barbara Brannen of Ener-Cast Human Resource Strategies

“Ener-Cast is a Human Resources Strategy Company,” Barbara says. “Our work is devoted to putting the energy into the cast of people a company has so carefully chosen.” Ener-Cast’s work focuses on better morale, reduction in turnover and the creation of a process to implement changes requested in employee surveys. “We help companies create a more collaborative culture or help to get everyone on board for what is planned in the coming year,” she says. “All of this is about making your company an ‘employer of choice.’ In addition we do leadership development, meeting and retreat facilitation, and human resource audits, create spectacular reward and recognition programs, and in general make your workplace a great place.”

Q: What do you find most fulfilling about running your business?
BB: I have been in Human Resources for over 30 years and I KNOW that people make a difference in the success of an organization in so many ways. Helping an organization make their workplace into something that is bringing out the best in everyone is not only fulfilling, but something I love to do. I know it makes life better for everyone involved.

Q: What motivated you to start this business? What is your background experience in this area?
BB: My motivation was fairly simple, I saw the difference in the financial success of organizations that cared about their people and invested in them. Having been a senior Human Resources professional for over 30 years, I have had the opportunity to be on the senior teams of four great companies and consult with over 50. I have also published in this area.

Q: What book has been most helpful to you in your business?
BB:
This is a hard question since there are so many good books. I love to read! A favorite is Wooden on Leadership by John Wooden. The one I go back to every day is A Deep Breath of Life by Alan Cohen, as he gives me a practical look at life combined with great spiritual guidance.

Q: Who has influenced you most in your life?
BB:
At the top of the list would be my husband, closely followed by my dad. Both these people are sensible and have an attitude about life that is uplifting and just plain fun.

Q: What has proved to be your most successful marketing strategy?
BB:
Speaking at conferences, meetings and conventions without a doubt. When people hear the stories of how successful human capital strategies made money for organizations they want some of that!

Q: What have been the greatest challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing, in your business?
BB:
My greatest challenge has always been that I love the work that I do, so I tend to immerse myself in client work and forget to market!

Q: How did you benefit/are you benefiting from participating in a Make-it-Fly® board?
BB: I love my board. We are wonderful about speaking freely, offering assistance and being there each month for accountability. I also learn SO much when they are talking about their businesses that help me in mine.

Q: What would you say to other business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly® board?
BB: I believe if you are open, want to and are willing to share your stories, pains and challenges to get help, and likewise willing to help others with theirs, this is for you.

Dave Block, Co-Founder of Make-it-FlyDave’s Networking Tip:

When talking with someone at an event, focus on that person—allow him or her to bask in the spotlight. Listen to what they say. Ask questions about their passions, what their ideal client looks like, who would make good power partners for them, what challenges they face as they grow their business. The answers to these questions will give insight into this person and better equip you to help him or her.

Victoria MunroThis Could Be Holding You Back
Part One of a Two-Part Series
By Victoria Munro

Subtle yet deeply held limiting beliefs could be preventing you from achieving your goals. What we truly believe—those often-unconscious assumptions about who we are and what we’re capable of—can propel us to greatness and enable us to achieve audacious dreams, or they can sabotage our efforts.

Negative beliefs that hold us back are rarely based on fact. They may have come from parents, early caregivers, teachers or society. We may have been told, “You can’t do …” “You’ll never…” and at some level have assumed it to be true.

Because we’re seldom aware of these ways of thinking, we rarely question them. Worse still, we may reinforce them with negative self-talk.

The good news is that we can choose what we believe.

What Do You Really Believe?
It’s a good exercise and can be revealing to find out what you truly believe. Take a minute and write down what you believe about money, yourself and your capabilities, success, your business, your market and/or your competition.

Change Limiting Beliefs:
In order to develop new thought patterns we must take a look at what we really believe in the objective light of day. Write down and think about each potentially limiting belief. Then, after each old limiting belief, write down a new, more appropriate belief. Repeat your new belief out loud. How does it feel?

Ask yourself the following questions:

Is this belief based on fact?
Where did it come from?
Does this belief support and help me to reach my goals?
What effect does believing this have on me and my business?
How does it make me feel?

Uncover any negative self-talk that supports this belief. Write a new positive self-talk statement.

To cultivate and keep a positive mindset, determine to change your “I can’t"s to “I can"s.

What You Believe Can Determine Your Destiny
Our beliefs are a powerful force within us. They can keep us trapped in the status quo, or free us to become who we were born to be and achieve the dreams we set out to reach. Henry Ford understood this when he said, “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”

Choose to change your old limiting beliefs now. This can alter the direction of your life and your business, and enable you to achieve extraordinary dreams.

Part Two of this two-part series, Release the Power of the Real You, will be published in the next edition of In-Flight Refueling—Secrets to Small Biz Success.
