Victoria’s book The Small Biz Balancing
Act : Secrets to Restoring Passion and Play in Business and Life
has finally gone to the printer.
Lack of balance and the resulting stress can destroy health (Victoria
knows first hand about this) and it can damage precious relationships.
Keeping a healthy balance in life is so important, yet is challenging
for many business owners—including us. We encourage you
to attend Make-it-Fly®’s
first Day Retreat, “The Balancing
Act,” presented by our friend Bob Heavers.
When Bob shared with us the title of the topic he’d planned
for the retreat, he had no idea about the upcoming book.
On Sunday, we’ll have been
married six years! Dave has a surprise romantic
get-away planned—should be fun!

|
The next Make-it-Fly
Café will be held on
Thursday, August 28, at our new location—The
Riverfront. We look forward to seeing you there!
Our very best regards,
Dave and Victoria |

Taya
Sweeden
St. Bernard Bankruptcy
With a slogan like “The Law Firm that Guides You Out of
the Storm,” you can imagine how much compassion Taya Sweeden
has for people having to declare bankruptcy. “We utilize
Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies to help people exit overwhelming
debt and regain hope and balance,” she says.
|
Originally called the Sweeden Law Firm, Taya opened
her practice in 2005, just before the sweeping changes to bankruptcy
law became effective. “In 2008,” Taya says, “we
started doing business as St. Bernard Bankruptcy due in large
part to Make-it-Fly®.”
Q: What do you find most fulfilling
about running your business?
TS: I find great
satisfaction in providing hope and solutions to persons experiencing
overwhelming debt. The relief people experience once they have
their options laid out is fulfilling. I often hear that a person
will “finally be able to sleep” when they realize
there is exit to the financial pressure consuming them.
Q: What motivated you to start
this business? What is your background experience in this area?
TS: I really enjoy
using my communication and analysis skills to problem solve for
clients and help them create individual plans to resolve their
debt situation. I have been practicing bankruptcy since graduating
from law school ten years ago. My experience includes working
on both sides of the bankruptcy system, which allows me to avoid
or minimize problems caused by lack of experience and disclosure.
Q: What book has been most helpful
to you in your business?
TS: Two
books have been very helpful. How to Start and Build a Law
Practice by Jay G. Foonberg is an invaluable resource specific
to my industry. The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber
started my business development journey, which ultimately led
me to Make-it-Fly®.
Q: Who has influenced you most
in your life?
TS: Kay
Yoshida, a wise and wonderful woman who has a daily commitment
to help people understand themselves better and take control of
their lives and attitudes through Christian principles.
Q: What has proved to be your most
successful marketing strategy?
TS: The
branding process developed and distilled the firm’s unique
identity, promise and target market. The brand/promise makes the
firm stand out when I participate in building relationships through
targeted networking with other professionals.
Q: What have been the greatest
challenges you have had to overcome, or are currently facing,
in your business?
TS: Time
management and the development of procedures so tasks can be delegated
have been significant challenges as business increases.
Q: How did you benefit from participating
in a Make-it-Fly® board?
TS: I
would not be positioned for achieving my goals without Dave Block
and the advisory board. Frankly, it radically changed how I think
of business and my appreciation for business owners. Make-it-Fly®
has catapulted my business to new levels.
Q: What would you say to other
business owners who are contemplating getting involved in a Make-it-Fly®
board?
TS:
You cannot make a better investment
in business development!

How
to Stay Encouraged
10 Tips to Keep You On Top
By Victoria Munro
Running a business, especially
in the early years, can be an emotional roller-coaster ride.
Running the many facets of the business, managing cash flow, handling
difficult clients, adapting to changing markets, and all in an
unpredictable economy, can be overwhelming. On top of that, life
simply isn’t always fair. Some days, it’s easy to
become discouraged and let the inner fire that inspired you to
launch this venture wane. There
are times when we all need encouragement.
Below are 10 tips to help you stay
encouraged and press on in spite of the ups and
downs, adversities and setbacks you may face.
| 1. |
Be
careful what you think Our thoughts have enormous
power to affect how we feel. They determine our attitude.
Read or listen to positive, inspirational books and reflect
on what you learn. |
| 2. |
Seek
out someone you can encourage. Others
around you need your help and support. Reaching out
to someone else will lift your spirits too. |
| 3. |
Think
about what motivated you to start your business.
It was probably more than a paycheck. Perhaps something you’re
passionate about that will make the world a better place.
Maybe something you enjoy and are really good at. Review and
recommit to your company mission. Write or rewrite the vision
you have for the business. |
| 4. |
Don’t
try to do it alone. Recruit a team of cheerleaders.
Surround yourself with positive, upbeat people who can be
your sounding board and provide the business know-how you
need. Choose those who’ll be honest with you, yet give
the emotional support and encouragement we all need when the
going gets tough—your
own personal board of advisors. |
| 5. |
Focus
on the positive. Be aware of and stop all
negative self-talk. Write out and repeat positive affirmations.
|
| 6. |
View
setbacks as stepping-stones to success. Don’t
waste time and energy rehearsing past (or possible future)
negative events. Determine to learn from every obstacle in
your path and every mistake you make. These experiences, the
lessons learned and knowledge gained will serve you well in
the future, and better equip you to help others. |
| 7. |
Find
someone to brainstorm with, bounce ideas off
and learn from. Just sharing your frustrations and challenges
with another can lighten the load. Consider hiring a personal
or business coach. |
| 8. |
Smile
often. Studies show that smiling releases
endorphins that make us feel good. It also causes a measurable
reduction in our blood pressure. Try it! It works, even when
you don’t feel like smiling. |
| 9. |
Create
a pleasant environment you enjoy working in.
Our surroundings affect the way we feel. When the sun is shining,
it’s easier to be cheerful. Music can also be a powerfully
enriching tool to calm and revitalize us. |
| 10. |
Be
good to yourself. Take a break. Go for a walk
and enjoy nature. Do something different. Take a mini vacation—get
away for a day or two and refocus. |

Victoria’s
Marketing Advice
Are You Listening?
Do you really know what your customers
think? Don’t assume you know. Ask them—do
whatever it takes to find out what they really think and
what they’d like. Then listen carefully to their
feedback, even if it’s negative. Thank them for
their input and make appropriate changes. Doing this can
create truly loyal customers. |
